Manager Opening
We require a Children’s Home Manager for our home based in White Colne, Colchester area. The home will care for up to 3 young people with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties (EBD). The annual salary is £45,000.
The candidate will be required to have worked in a Residential Children’s Home for a minimum of two of the last five years and have had one of the last five years working in a supervisory level.
At Shalamar, we aim to help young people and have a lot of skills and methods using PACE and attachment theory to guide us. Full training in our practice and our ethos will be given to the successful candidate and daily support will be available to assist you.
We appreciate that a Home Manager position can be very pressurised and stressful. Because of that, we have a team of back office staff who are there to assist and ensure that areas of work are completed for/on behalf of the Home Manager. Items of work that the back office undertake on behalf of the Manager include:
- The HR Officer will prepare the rota for the home – this is prepared by the back office staff and usually is completed 6 weeks in advance of the current date. Where bank or agency carers are urgently required when a scheduled carer is unwell – this work is also undertaken by back office.
- The HR Officer will assist and guide on staff and disciplinary aspects of work – again the back office will advise the Home Manager and will arrange meetings, send out letters and contracts and job descriptions as required.
- The HR Officer will conduct all background checks to meet the Regulations for all new members of staff.
- The HR Officer will deal with Staff Recruitment – the back office will place adverts, sift applications and conduct interviews. Only those suitable for the vacant full time/shift leader position will be put through to the Home Manager to interview, and for them to have the final say. The back office will then undertake all of the work required to ensure that candidates have all of the required reference and DBS checks as per the schedule 2 requirements.
- The Responsible Individual will update Policies. The practical update of these is again by the RI/back office team after discussion with the Home Manager.
- The DIY Team will deal with, or assist in most aspects of DIY/Home maintenance – this is an important aspect of the home and we have systems that allow for the Home Manager and Shift Leaders to feed back work needed to be done to the back office, and for this work to be undertaken by our DIY team and managed by the back office team.
- The Training Administrator will deal with most aspects of Staff Training – We have a separate training department that keeps all carers on track with their training, as we believe in training our carers and managers to a high standard.
All of these areas above, undertaken by our back office, means that the Home Manager has more time to complete the daily tasks required. Of course, as Home Manager you will be able to oversee these aspects, but the actual tasks will be undertaken by our support team. In addition to this, the Home Manager will have the assistance of a part time deputy to help with the running of the home.
Flexible hours apply to suit the needs of the Home and the successful candidate – although we will require you to attend the Home’s handover of shifts at 8am as much as possible. The successful candidate will be required to be take part in our On Call rota which is also supported by Senior Carers.
We will pay for the Home Manager to take the level 5 diploma (if required), so that Ofsted’s requirements are met.
Shalamar does all it can to support its managers and staff, and we achieve this by way of monthly management meetings, monthly supervision, and the assistance of an Area Manager to help the managers stay on top of the work.
Please do not apply if you have not worked in a children’s home previously, as a successful applicant will need to apply to be registered with Ofsted. Of course, the successful candidate will be background checked to meet the Children’s Home (England) Regulations 2015.
